Updates to Assessment Practices

As shared in the PTM sessions held in early 2024, here are changes that will be introduced to Madrasah Aljunied Al-Islamiah beginning 2024.

1. Removal of Mid-Year Exams and Introduction of Weighted Assessment

As shared in the PTM sessions held in January and February 2024, Madrasah Aljunied will remove the mid-year exams for Secondary 1 and Secondary 2 students starting from 2024. In its place, we are introducing Weighted Assessments to enhance student learning while maintaining the academic rigour necessary for students’ development. Please refer to the table below:

Note:

  • WA will be held in class only during the allocated time, therefore no extra time will be given to latecomers.

  • For absentees without a valid reason (e.g. without MC), no marks will be given. Absentees with valid reason will have the weightage allocated for the WA transferred to the End Year Exam.

  • In line with education industry practice in most schools in Singapore, re-sitting of papers will be abolished unless there are extenuating circumstances to do so.

2. GPA System

Beginning 2024, we will also be updating the grading system to the GPA system. Please refer to the table below.

Please note that the following subjects are graded but non-weighted:

  1. Islam and Society

  2. Islamic History

  3. Physical Education

For these subjects, student performance is recorded in a more comprehensive, criterion-based manner which is then translated into a

grade for recording purposes. The grades for the non-examinable subjects will not be included in the CGPA.

While these subjects are non-weighted, their performance may be considered for promotion/graduation status and should therefore

be taken seriously.

3. CGPA System

From 2024, Madrasah Aljunied will use the Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA) system, adapted to the madrasah’s unique needs.

The CGPA system will apply to all subjects except IBDP subjects, which have its grading system.

Two GPA figures will be computed:

  • Semester GPA: sum of (grade point * HPW) / sum of (HPW) for modules examined (including failed modules) in the semester.

  • Cumulative GPA: sum of (grade point * HPW) / sum of (HPW) for all modules examined (including failed modules) up to and including the current semester.

*HPW refers to hissah per week, i.e. the number of periods per week which is reflective of the weightage of each subject.

The CGPA will be cumulated at the end of every two levels and be used as a promotion criteria:

  • The GPA for Secondary 1 and 2 will be cumulated as CGPA at the end of Secondary 2

  • The GPA for Secondary 3 and 4 will be cumulated as CGPA at the end of Secondary 4

  • The GPA for Pre-University 1 and 2 will be cumulated as CGPA at the end of Pre-University 2.

To illustrate, a student who completed Sec 1 and will be entering Sec 2, will be advanced subject to satisfactory academic and disciplinary conduct. While no minimum CGPA is required to be advanced, Secondary 1 CGPA will be calculated at the end of Secondary 2. At the end of every two levels, students who achieve the passing CGPA will be promoted to the next level.

The CGPA system will apply 2024 for all levels except Sec 4 and Pre-U 2. CGPA for these two levels which will take into effect in 2025.

4. CT, CA, and SA Matters

In line with assessment practice in most schools in Singapore, the following applies to Sec 3 to Pre-University 2 students:

  • Re-sitting of papers will be abolished unless there are extenuating circumstances to do so.

  • Absentees without a valid reason (e.g. without MC): no marks will be given.

  • Absentees with valid reason (VR): weightage allocated for the missed paper will be calculated according to the following:

    • If a student misses CT, weightage for the CT will be aggregated to the CA (and vice-versa).

    • If a student misses the mid-year exam, weightage for the mid-year exam will be aggregated to the end-year exam.

    • If a student misses the end-year exam, weightage for the end-year exam will be aggregated from the students' prior assessments in the year.
